BRIDGE, STRUCTURAL and REINFORCING IRON WORKERS LOCAL UNION No. 1

HISTORY: Iron Workers Local Union #1 was organized in 1892.

PURPOSE: To supply skilled Iron Workers to Union Contractors.

TRAINED WORK FORCE: Local #1 has its own Training Center, which besides training Apprentices, we offer Journeyman training courses that keep Local #I's Journeymen trained in the latest construction technology. Local #1 offers its Journeymen the following courses:

Weld Certification & Training CPR-First Aid

Confined Space Training Weld Symbols - Basic Metallurgy

Metric Measurement Structural Drawings

Rebar Drawings Basic Layout

Haz-Mat Lead Hazard & Abatement

Fork Truck Safety Class Curtain Wall II

Foreman Training Pre-Cast Training

Post-Tension Field Applications Optical, Digital,

Metal Building Construction and Laser Instruments

HIRING PROCEDURE: Contractors can hire and layoff as needed. Local #1 can supply skilled Iron Workers on demand, if not from our 1,600 Local #I members, then from over 100,000 members from within our International Association. Contractors can hire any member they choose, or "Call back any members that have worked for them in the past. Local #1 does not have a Hiring Hall.

DRUG TESTING: Local #1 Drug Tests all new Apprentices.

NEGOTIATED WAGE RATES: All Union Contractors bid under the same conditions. No one Contractor has an advantage over the other - same wage rate for all.

JOB TARGETING PROGRAM: Local #1 has a program in place that lowers our wage rates if needed to help our Contractors get more jobs.

BENEFITS: Local #I's Health & Welfare Fund, Pension Fund, Annuity Fund and Apprenticeship Fund are managed by both Labor and Management with equal representation from both sides.
